HVAC Spring Cleaning Checklist

Turning back the clocks, shopping for t-shirts and patio furniture, heading to soccer practice…these are certainly harbingers of Spring, but how about a bit of Spring (HVAC) cleaning?

Sure, we tidy up the yard, raking, mowing, and preparing the garden, but have you given any thought to cleaning that HVAC system? Spring has sprung, so let’s talk about this often neglected piece of home maintenance that could save you loads of time and money.

HVAC setups need annual maintenance and checkups, just like so many other components of your home or office. Don’t fret, this need not be a daunting task—follow our simple checklist to get on track to having the cleanest, most efficient HVAC on your block.

Clean outside around the unit.

Take a look at your HVAC’s outdoor components and remove any weeds, grasses, or debris such as pebbles, sticks, and rubbish that may have accumulated around it this past winter.  Doing this will ensure the AC and heat pump’s airflow function properly without any obstructions.

Change the filter regularly.

Changing your HVAC air filters at least once every 90 days will keep your system running efficiently. Dirt, dust, pollen, animal fur, and other allergens clog up filters and over time, diminish the HVAC system’s overall productivity. In short, change those filters and keep that airflow clean and healthy for your loved ones. Anyone suffering from allergies or asthma should change their air filters monthly in order to keep conditions safe.

Grab your vacuum!

Inspect any indoor components for pet fur, dust, and other debris, then grab your cleaning cloths and a vacuum. Gently wiping cobwebs and the like from your vents will help keep the air flowing properly, maintaining your setup’s efficiency, and preventing the equipment from working too hard. Remember that stressed out, neglected HVAC components tax the entire system, leading to unnecessary breakdowns and damage.
